New Minister of Interior Outlines Bold Agenda: From Border Security to Inmate Rehabilitation, Tunji-Ojo’s Vision for a Safer Nigeria
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the newly appointed Minister of Interior, has outlined his top priorities for his role in the ministry. Tunji-Ojo stated that he has been mandated to revamp the ministry and its agencies by implementing policies that address internal security concerns.
During a briefing with journalists, Tunji-Ojo unveiled his blueprint for realizing President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda and highlighted his seven priority areas.
The first priority is the deployment of technology to enhance border security. The minister emphasized the importance of effectively securing Nigeria’s borders by utilizing advanced technological solutions.
Another priority is the removal of passport bottlenecks, aiming to streamline and improve the passport issuance process to make it more efficient for individuals.
Tunji-Ojo also emphasized the need to enhance the response time of the Federal Fire Service to mitigate the impact of fire disasters. He stressed the importance of optimizing the service’s processes to ensure a faster and more effective response to fire incidents.
Additionally, the minister expressed his commitment to reforming the country’s correctional system, focusing on the rehabilitation of inmates to prevent the recycling of criminals.
Tackling insecurity is another crucial priority. Tunji-Ojo pledged to work closely with stakeholders to address the internal security challenges that Nigeria currently faces, ensuring that Nigerians can live without fear.
Furthermore, the minister stated that decongesting custodial centers is a priority, aiming to improve the conditions and reduce overcrowding in these facilities.
Finally, Tunji-Ojo highlighted the passage of a new Fire Act as a priority, aiming to update and strengthen the legislation governing fire safety in Nigeria.
Tunji-Ojo expressed his determination to fulfill these priorities and bring about positive change in the Ministry of Interior. He concluded by emphasizing his commitment to ensuring improved internal security in Nigeria, allowing citizens to sleep peacefully.
The minister also expressed his disappointment with the current state of the correctional system, vowing to put an end to the cycle of releasing and reoffending criminals.
