Nigerian Immigration Probes Shocking Passport Destruction at Lagos Airport
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a formal investigation following the widespread circulation of a video showing a dramatic incident at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.
The video, which surfaced on social media, captured a female traveler, identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, tearing up her husband’s Nigerian Standard Passport shortly after their arrival from abroad.
The incident, which many have condemned as vandalism of government property, has sparked significant public outrage and calls for legal action.
In the video, Mrs. Igiebor, holding passport number A11990869, can be seen angrily tearing the document while being questioned. In response, she retorted, “Is it your passport?” before sternly addressing her husband, “If you want to sleep there, sleep there, this is Nigeria, this is where you will be,” as she led their children away. Onlookers, including airport officials, attempted to calm the situation, advising the stunned husband to remain silent.
In light of the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kenneth Udo, issued a statement revealing that the Comptroller General of Immigration has directed that Mrs. Igiebor be summoned for further investigation. The NIS emphasized that, should the allegations be confirmed, her actions would constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with corresponding penalties detailed under Section 10(h) of the same Act.
Udo reaffirmed the Nigeria Immigration Service’s commitment to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act, underscoring the importance of safeguarding national security and maintaining the dignity and integrity of the country’s legal documents.
