₦70,000 Minimum Wage: Federal Government, Trade Unions Finalize Salary Adjustments, Sign MoU

The Federal Government has successfully concluded negotiations on consequential salary adjustments, following the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage Act 2024, which sets the minimum wage at ₦70,000. Both the government and labour representatives have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) marking the end of the discussions.

The 16-member committee on the consequential salary adjustments was inaugurated penultimate Friday by the Chairman, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HCSF), Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The committee was tasked with addressing salary adjustments following the president’s approval of the new wage structure on July 18, 2024, which raised the federal minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000.

Speaking during the signing ceremony held in Abuja, Mrs. Walson-Jack praised the collaborative efforts of the committee members from both the government and trade unions. “Both the trade union and government sides have agreed on the Consequential Adjustments in Salaries arising from the new minimum wage of ₦70,000,” she said.

The HCSF described the negotiation process as the shortest and most peaceful in recent times. “All members considered the MoU carefully, and we have all signed copies, concluding this exercise by handing over the documents to representatives of both sides,” she added.

The signed MoU will now be forwarded to the federal government for further action as part of its commitment to ensuring fair wages for civil servants in line with the new law. Mrs. Walson-Jack expressed confidence that the agreements would benefit both the workforce and the government’s drive toward improved governance and economic stability.
