The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, has been impeached following weeks of controversy surrounding his leadership. Obasa, who had served as Speaker since June 8, 2015, was replaced by his deputy, Mrs. Lasbat Meranda, the representative for Apapa Constituency 1. Meranda, a former Chief Whip of the House, assumes the position amid growing concerns over Obasa’s handling of the state’s finances and governance.

The impeachment came just days after reports emerged detailing a N43.5 billion withdrawal overseen by Obasa for the purchase of backup vehicles for lawmakers, among other controversial actions. His removal occurred while he was in Atlanta, as sources confirm that the decision was made in his absence.
