Nigeria Launches National Framework to Boost Employment for Persons with Disabilities
Nigeria has launched a groundbreaking National Framework on Access to Work for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), aimed at promoting equal employment opportunities for qualified individuals with disabilities. The initiative seeks to address the stark disparity in employment rates, as only 2% of Nigeria’s over 35 million PWDs currently have access to formal jobs.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD), Chief Ayuba Gufwan, unveiled the framework at a launch event in Lagos. He emphasized that the framework will ensure the full implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act through a collaborative approach.
“The framework seeks to end workplace discrimination against PWDs and recommends that all employers reserve at least 5% of job placements for qualified individuals with disabilities,” Gufwan stated.
To kickstart the framework’s implementation, Chief Gufwan announced a ₦150 million donation to procure assistive devices and technologies, ensuring workplaces are more accessible and inclusive for PWDs.
Dr Joy Shuaibu, Country Director of Sightsavers Nigeria, stressed the importance of collaboration between the government, private sector, and stakeholders. “This framework is a critical step toward ensuring that persons with disabilities can access employment and contribute meaningfully to society,” she said.
George Dominic Anwayi, Assistant Program Manager at TAF Africa, also praised the initiative, noting its potential to increase employment opportunities for PWDs in the private sector.
