Super Eagles Back on Track: Osimhen’s Double Secures 2-0 Win in Kigali

Victor Osimhen’s remarkable performance reignited Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign as the Super Eagles secured a 2-0 victory over Rwanda in Kigali. This win marks Nigeria’s first in the qualifiers, following a series of three draws and a loss in their initial four matches.

Under the new leadership of coach Éric Chelle, Nigeria displayed renewed vigor. Osimhen, who had previously faced conflicts with former coach Finidi George, showcased his prowess by netting both goals. The first came in the 11th minute, converting a free-kick delivered by Ademola Lookman. He doubled the lead just before halftime with a composed chip over Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari.

The defense, anchored by William Troost-Ekong and Calvin Bassey, remained resolute, effectively neutralizing Rwanda’s offensive efforts. This solid defensive display ensured a clean sheet for the Super Eagles.

With this victory, Nigeria ascends to fourth place in Group C, now trailing Rwanda by just one point. To secure a spot in the World Cup, Nigeria must aim to finish at the top of their group or be among the four best second-placed teams to qualify for the intercontinental playoffs.

Coach Chelle’s tenure begins on a positive note, with hopes that this momentum will carry the team through the remaining qualifiers. The Super Eagles will look to build on this success in their upcoming fixtures as they strive to secure a place in the 2026 World Cup.
