Russia Invasion: Rebellion was a protest not an attempt to overthrow Putin – Prigozhin

Head of the Wagner mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, released an 11-minute audio message on Monday, where he denied his march for justice was to topple Russian President Vladimir Putin after leading Saturday’s mutiny.

Yevgeny Prigozhin said his men headed to Moscow to hold to account those leaders he blamed for mistakes in the Ukraine war.

The Wagner founder has put the blame on Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, accusing him of bungling the invasion of Ukraine and of attempting to “destroy” Wagner as he also claimed on Monday that Russia’s Defense Ministry had planned for Wagner to “cease to exist” from July 1.

Troops from his private military group seized control of the military base in southern city of Rostov-on-Don and moved in convoy towards Russia’s capital on Saturday in a remarkable and unexpected challenge to Putin. The march was suddenly called off when Lukashenko’s deal was struck.

However, Russia said it is investigating if the US and its allies were involved in the mutiny. However, US President Joe Biden denied any involvement, saying it was part of a struggle within Russian system.

According to the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, “Prigozhin’s message showed there was no legitimacy for the Ukraine war “.
