Police Command clamp down on cop-turned-domestic: officers face sanctions for menial duties
The Osun Police Command has issued a stern warning to its officers who are assigned to government officials. The command’s spokesperson, SP Yemisi Opalola, conveyed the message through a statement released in Osogbo on Monday.
In the statement, SP Yemisi Opalola emphasized that the primary duty of police officers attached to government officials is to safeguard their lives and property, not to perform menial domestic tasks for them. The command expressed concern about the prevalent misuse of police orderlies, who are being engaged in activities such as carrying handbags, umbrellas, and opening gates, which are clearly beyond their professional duties.
The command unequivocally stated that police officers must refrain from such activities and should focus solely on protecting their principals from security threats. Any deviation from this duty will be considered highly unethical and unprofessional, and appropriate sanctions will be imposed on officers found to be engaging in such behavior.
“The command is miffed with consternation the way and manner government officials and personalities use police orderlies attached to them for domestic duties, such as carrying handbags, umbrellas and opening of gates, amongst other menial duties.”
“The command, therefore, warns police officers attached to these officials to stop carrying out or serving purposes other than protecting their principals from security threats,” the statement added.
It further stated that “such behaviour is highly unethical, unprofessional and would attract appropriate sanctions against erring police personnel.
“Government officials are therefore enjoined to employ the services of domestic staff and personal assistants to carry out such services,” he added.
