AMOTEKUN: Detention of Immigration officer sparks violent shootout

A violent clash occurred in the Oke-Fia neighborhood of Osogbo, Osun State, between the National Immigration Services (NIS) and the Western Nigerian Security Network, also known as Amotekun. According to eyewitnesses, the incident began when an NIS officer was detained at the Amotekun office in the Government House Annex. The officer was accused of insulting the Amotekun boss and violating a traffic law.

On Wednesday, the convoy of Amotekun Corps-Commandant, Brig.-Gen. Bashir Adewimbi (rtd), reportedly passed through the Ola-Iya area and allegedly disregarded traffic regulations.

This led to a confrontation between the Immigration officer and the Amotekun operatives at their base. The officer allegedly insulted the convoy drivers and their boss. Infuriated by the situation, the Amotekun commandant ordered the officer’s detention. Prior to his arrest, the officer had called for reinforcement.

As of the time of this report, several establishments remained closed due to the exchange of gunfire that took place in the busy area.

Patrol vans belonging to both NIS and Amotekun were observed within the premises of the Government House annex. However, the leadership of both agencies was reportedly engaged in a meeting to find a resolution to the issue.
