Oba Olakulehin Was a Unifier and Patriarch of Tradition — Prof Gbolagade

Abiodun Gbolagade, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State and Oluyole Federal Constituency hopeful, has expressed sadness over the passing of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), who joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025.

The revered monarch’s passing comes just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday on July 5, and barely a year after ascending the throne as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland in July 2024.

In a condolence message issued in Ibadan, Prof Gbolagade described the death of Oba Olakulehin as a great loss not only to the people of Ibadanland, but to Oyo State and the traditional institution at large. He offered his heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the Olubadan-in-Council, Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, the Government of Oyo State, and all sons and daughters of Ibadanland.

“Oba Olakulehin was a unifier, a symbol of stability, and a great custodian of our cultural heritage. His reign, though brief, was marked by dignity, wisdom, and a deep commitment to the peace and progress of Ibadanland.”

He recalled the monarch’s long-standing contributions to public service and traditional leadership, noting that his life was one of honour, marked by resilience and an unwavering dedication to the unity of Ibadan and the preservation of its customs.

“His Majesty’s passing so shortly after his milestone 90th birthday reminds us of the fleeting nature of life, but also of the enduring legacy he leaves behind.”

“May the soul of our revered monarch rest in perfect peace, and may his memory continue to inspire leadership founded on wisdom, service, and cultural pride.”
