WAFCON Final: Tinubu Charges Super Falcons to Make History

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigeria’s Super Falcons to finish strong and bring home the trophy as they prepare to face host nation Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.

In a statement personally signed by him on Saturday, the President expressed confidence in the team’s abilities, stating, “You will finish strong by the Grace of God. Go for the tenth! Bring the trophy home. Your fellow countrymen and women, young and old, are rooting for you.”

Commending the team for their exceptional display throughout the tournament, President Tinubu said their performance over the past three weeks had inspired the nation. “You have represented our country with pride, honour, and strength.”

He particularly praised the team’s demonstration of sportsmanship, referencing their visit to South Africa’s Gabriela Salgado, who was injured during the semi-final clash. “That simple act of compassion reflects our shared humanity, empathy, and sisterly affection, which we Africans hold in high regar.”

While highlighting the team’s impressive statistics, undefeated in the group stage, triumphant in the knockout rounds, and conceding just one goal en route to the final, the President said the nation was solidly behind them.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, we are rooting for you and praying for your resounding success tonight, as you strive to achieve the crowning accomplishment of lifting a record 10th continental title,” Tinubu stated.

To demonstrate the government’s support, the President disclosed that a high-powered delegation had been sent to Rabat to cheer the team on. The delegation includes the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa; Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite; Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim; and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, among others.

President Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the families of the Super Falcons, coaches, friends, the Nigerian community in Morocco, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, and the Nigerian Mission in Morocco for their unwavering support throughout the tournament.
