BREAKING: Nigerian land borders to be reopened

Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, confirms the reopening after meeting with President Tinubu

In a significant development, Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has announced that all land borders in Nigeria will be reopened upon the conclusion of the ongoing administrative reorganization conducted by the Customs Service. This revelation came following a crucial audience between Adeniyi and President Tinubu.

The decision to reopen the land borders comes as part of the Nigerian government’s continuous efforts to enhance trade and promote economic growth. The administrative reorganization within the Customs Service is aimed at streamlining operations, improving efficiency, and bolstering security measures.

Acting Comptroller General Adeniyi expressed confidence in the progress made during the reorganization, assuring the public that the Customs Service is committed to implementing necessary changes to facilitate smooth border operations. The reopening of the land borders is expected to boost cross-border trade, foster regional integration, and encourage investments in various sectors.

The closure of Nigerian land borders, which was enforced in August 2019, had been implemented to curb smuggling activities and promote local production. While the move had some positive effects on the economy, it also posed challenges for businesses engaged in legitimate cross-border trade. The reopening of the land borders will come as a relief to these businesses, providing them with new opportunities and avenues for growth.

President Tinubu, who was briefed on the progress of the administrative reorganization by Adeniyi, expressed satisfaction with the efforts undertaken by the Customs Service. The President emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and conducive environment for both domestic and international trade.
