APC Chieftain, Barr Agbaje tasks Party on Progressivism
Barrister Agbaje, a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, has urged the party to refocus on the principles of true progressivism. The legal luminary, during a radio interview over the weekend, expressed his concerns about the recent electoral performance of the APC in Oyo State and suggested a way forward for the party.
Barrister Agbaje emphasized the need for the party to prioritize its core values and ideals of progressivism, particularly in light of the unfavorable outcome at the2023 general elections in which the party failed to unseat the incumbent governor, Engr Seyi Makinde.
The influential Chieftain of the Party in Oyo State pointed out that one of the key issues plaguing the party is the struggle for power and control within its ranks. He highlighted the need for the party to prioritize the collective ownership of the party over individual ambitions. According to Agbaje, the party should be led by party leaders rather than individual candidates.
“We need to return to the ideals of progressive politics. The party should own the party not the candidate. You have a situation where different candidates try to take over the party. It is different when you have the governor as the leader of the party. Recent trends particularly in 2023 is that we had candidates trying to be leaders of the party. Candidates should be candidates while party leaders should be allowed to be in charge of the party. As it is now, there is no single individual who has the capacity to be the sole leader of the party. “
