Confusion Cleared: Agodi Garden Safe, Baywood Estate to Rise on Separate Land

Oyo State Commissioner for Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mr. Williams Akin-Funmilayo, has laid to rest concerns about the planned Baywood Housing Estate encroaching on the historic Agodi Botanical Gardens.

The commissioner clarified that while the gardens remain untouched on their 9.11 hectares, a separate 46.3-hectare forest behind the gardens will be developed into the Baywood Estate. This move aims to address security concerns and unlock housing potential, without compromising the cherished green space.

“Agodi Gardens is a legacy we’re committed to protecting,” Akin-Funmilayo affirmed during a tour for journalists. “In fact, we plan to upgrade it to an international standard, not demolish it.”

He debunked rumors of tree cutting, emphasizing that 80% of the forest will remain untouched despite the development. The commissioner noted that the forest, unfortunately, became a haven for criminal activity, posing a threat to residents.

“Converting the forest to a housing estate is not just about building houses,” he explained. “It’s about making our city safer and addressing the housing deficit.”

Akin-Funmilayo showcased a survey plan, illustrating the clear boundaries between the gardens, the fishery department, and the designated estate area. He assured the public that no part of the gardens will be touched.

Concerns about environmental impact were also addressed. “Preserving trees is a core value of the Baywood Estate,” the commissioner stated. “We understand the importance of green spaces and will minimize deforestation, replacing any trees lost due to infrastructure.”

He reiterated the government’s commitment to Agodi Gardens’ future. “The plan is to upgrade it, not convert it. We want it to be a source of pride for generations to come,” Akin-Funmilayo concluded.

This clarification provides much-needed reassurance for both environmental enthusiasts and potential residents. Baywood Estate promises to be a positive development for Ibadan, while Agodi Gardens will continue to flourish as a cherished green oasis.
