Tinubu Slashes Entourage Size by 60% in Bid to Cut Governance Costs
In a move aimed at streamlining government spending, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a drastic reduction in the size of his entourage for both local and foreign trips.
The new directive, effective immediately, slashes the number of accompanying personnel by 60%, marking a significant step towards President Tinubu’s pledge to cut the cost of governance.
Special Adviser on Media, Ajuri Ngelale, confirmed the new policy, stating that only 20 individuals will now accompany the President on international trips, while the Vice President and First Lady’s entourages will be limited to five people each. Domestic travel will also see a reduction, with the President’s entourage capped at 25, the Vice President’s at 15, and the First Lady’s at 10.
President Tinubu’s commitment to fiscal prudence extends beyond travel restrictions. He has also directed a significant reduction in the number of security personnel accompanying him during visits to Nigerian states. The President intends to rely on the existing security architecture within each state he visits, emphasizing a collaborative approach to security while minimizing unnecessary expenditure.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has issued a stern warning to all ministers and public servants, emphasizing that any violation of this new policy will result in immediate sanctions. This unwavering stance underscores his determination to enforce efficiency and accountability within the government.
The President’s decision however, has been met with mixed reactions. Some have lauded it as a necessary step towards fiscal responsibility and a break from the perceived extravagance of previous administrations. Others, however, have expressed concern about potential implications for security and protocol.
