……Super Eagles Receive National Honours and Land Grants at Presidential Reception
President Bola Tinubu hosted a triumphant reception for the Super Eagles football team at the State House today, praising their remarkable journey to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals and emphasizing the power of their unity and diversity.
Despite falling short of the gold medal, the Super Eagles’ resilience and teamwork captivated the nation throughout the tournament. “You started slowly, but progressed to the finals, demonstrating determination and leaving your clubs to honor your country,” President Tinubu remarked. “You gave us great excitement and lifted our spirits.”
Recognizing the significance of their performance, the President conferred national honors on each team member, awarding them the “Member of the Order of the Niger” distinction. Furthermore, he pledged substantial support for the players’ futures, announcing the donation of a flat and a plot of land to each individual.
Beyond individual recognition, President Tinubu highlighted the team’s contribution to a larger message: “You have proved that our greatest strength lies in our diversity,” he declared. “Your unity on the field showcased the potential of Nigerians coming together, regardless of background, to achieve greatness.”
This commitment to unity extended to a promise of increased investment in sports development. “We will consult with you on how to facilitate and promote sports development,” the President announced. “I will attract greater private sector investment in the Nigerian Professional Football League and become a super promoter of sports in our country.”
Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, applauded the President’s commitment, underscoring the positive impact of a dedicated ministry: “For the first time, we have gone through a major competition without any issues related to allowances or bonuses. This kept the team focused on the matches, leading to quality results.”
Echoing the Minister’s sentiment, William Troost-Ekong, the team’s Vice-Captain, expressed gratitude for the support and vowed to strive for gold in the future: “We promise to continue working hard, and the next time we meet, hopefully next year, we will be bringing home a gold medal.”
