In a welcome move for commuters, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) has greenlit N759 billion for the construction of key roads linking Obajana to Benin and Isheri North to Ogun State. This significant investment is part of a larger N873.23 billion package approved for infrastructure projects under the Ministry of Works.

Following the FEC meeting, Works Minister Dave Umahi addressed the press, highlighting the importance of these projects. “Today’s approvals mark a significant step forward in improving Nigeria’s road network,” Umahi declared. “These new roads will not only ease traffic congestion but also create vital connections that boost economic activity across the southwest region.

A substantial portion, N897 billion, will be dedicated to finally completing the Obajana-Benin road. This critical 489-kilometer stretch was initially awarded in 2012 for N122 billion but faced delays due to scope changes.

“We meticulously reviewed the project to ensure it met current needs,” explained Umahi. “This included assessing the viability of a dual carriageway and conducting thorough soil tests. We’re confident the additional funding will deliver a modern, high-capacity road that benefits Nigerians for years to come.”

The FEC also approved N2.23 billion for the construction of the Isheri North-Ogun State road. This strategic route will provide a much-needed alternative to the Lagos-Shagamu expressway, a notorious bottleneck for travelers.

“Let me be clear,” Umahi emphasized, “Nigerian law prohibits tolling federal roads without a viable alternative. The Isheri-Ogun road fulfills this requirement, allowing us to explore tolling options for the Lagos-Shagamu expressway in the future. This will generate revenue for further infrastructure development while offering drivers a congestion-free bypass.”

These projects represent a significant commitment to improving Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure. By enhancing connectivity and reducing travel times, the Obajana-Benin and Isheri-Ogun roads are poised to unlock economic growth and improve the lives of millions of Nigerians.
