Abuja Electricity Distribution Company Fined ₦200 Million for Tariff Violation, Customers to Receive Refunds

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has penalized the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) ₦200 million for breaching the new tariff order.

The penalty follows an investigation triggered by customer complaints and a review by NERC, which revealed AEDC charged customers outside their designated bands under the April 2024 Multi-Year Tariff Order. This order established a tiered pricing system based on electricity supply levels.

“This decision ensures fair billing practices within the electricity sector,” NERC stated.

AEDC must now: Reimburse customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were overcharged, provide these customers with additional electricity tokens reflecting the correct tariff band, pay the ₦200 million fine for violating the order.

The deadline for completing these actions is April 11th, 2024 for reimbursements and April 12th for submitting compliance evidence to NERC.
