First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Flags Off Nationwide Business Recapitalization Grant for Petty Traders

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has launched the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme, aimed at supporting women petty traders across the nation. The flag-off event took place in Asaba, Delta State, where 1,000 traders received N50,000 each as part of a broader initiative to boost the informal sector.

The First Lady, who also serves as the Chairman of RHI, emphasized the importance of this initiative, noting that it is designed to alleviate some of the challenges faced by petty traders, who form the backbone of local economies. Through this program, RHI will disburse a total of N1.85 billion to 37,000 women petty traders across Nigeria.

Speaking at the event, Senator Tinubu highlighted the resilience and strength of women in the face of economic difficulties. “As we are all aware of the challenges faced by Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), especially the petty traders, who form the backbone of our local economies, these challenges, however, have not deterred the strength of our women. I salute you all and celebrate your courage and resilience that keep you going, to put food on the table for your families,” she stated.

The First Lady further underscored the strategic importance of empowering women economically, not only as a moral imperative but as a key driver of national prosperity. “When women thrive, their families thrive, and by extension, our communities and nation prosper,” she remarked, adding that the initiative will provide 1,000 pre-selected women petty traders in each state with the grant to help recapitalize and expand their businesses.

The event in Asaba was graced by the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who was represented by his wife, Tobore Oborevwori. The Governor lauded the First Lady’s efforts and announced an additional N50,000 grant from the state government to further support the beneficiaries. He praised Senator Tinubu for her contributions through RHI, particularly in the areas of agriculture, education, economic empowerment, and social investment.

The RHI Economic Empowerment Programme for 1,000 women petty traders was held simultaneously across all states, each beneficiary receiving the N50,000 business recapitalization grant. The initiative represents a significant step towards enhancing the economic stability of women, supporting the ongoing reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
