Hon Umar Farouk Arisekola-Alao Celebrates the 2024 International Day of the Girl, Calls for Greater Action on Girl-Child Welfare

In celebration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl, Hon Umar Farouk Arisekola-Alao, Ibadan North Federal House of Representatives hopeful has reiterated his commitment to the welfare of the girl child, emphasizing the importance of empowering girls to shape a better future for themselves and society.

The theme for this year’s commemoration, “Girls’ Vision for the Future,” calls for urgent action and underscores the persistent hope driven by the power of girls’ voices and their aspirations for a brighter tomorrow. In his message, the former Commissioner for Youth and Sports in Oyo State emphasized the significance of listening to and supporting girls, ensuring they are equipped with the tools and opportunities needed to achieve their full potential.

“On this International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the vision, determination, and resilience of girls across the world, especially in Nigeria. This year’s theme, ‘Girls’ Vision for the Future,’ highlights the importance of hearing and supporting the dreams and aspirations of girls. It is crucial that we take urgent action to address the barriers that stand in their way and create an environment where every girl can succeed.”

“Throughout my career, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of empowering young people, especially girls. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that girls are not only safe and educated but are also given the platform to express their vision for the future. We must nurture their leadership and creativity, allowing their voices to shape the decisions that affect them and the future of our communities,” he added.

“As we commemorate this day, let us remember that the fight for the welfare of the girl child is far from over. We must continue to advocate for equal opportunities, fight against harmful practices, and ensure that girls have access to quality education and healthcare. Only by doing so can we realize their vision for the future.”

He concluded by expressing hope that the 2024 International Day of the Girl would inspire greater action from governments, communities, and individuals to support the welfare and empowerment of girls.
