JUST IN: FEC Streamlines Ministries, Introduces New Regional Development Ministry
The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a significant restructuring of federal ministries, leading to the scrapping of the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Ministry of Sports Development. These decisions were reached during the FEC meeting held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
The decision is aimed at streamlining governance and fostering regional growth, the FEC announced the creation of the Ministry of Regional Development. This new ministry will oversee all regional development commissions, including the Niger Delta Development Commission, North West Development Commission, South West Development Commission, North East Development Commission, and South East Development Commission. The restructuring is expected to enhance coordination and promote balanced regional development across the country.
Additionally, the responsibilities of the now-defunct Ministry of Sports Development will be transferred to the newly established National Sports Commission. This commission will take over the management of sports policies and initiatives, focusing on promoting national sports development and enhancing Nigeria’s performance in international competitions.
The FEC also approved the merger of the Ministry of Tourism with the Ministry of Culture and Creative Economy. This merger is anticipated to boost efforts in promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and tourism potential while creating new opportunities in the creative economy.
