David Moyes Returns to Everton as Manager Following Dyche’s Departure
Everton has announced the return of David Moyes as the club’s new manager after the sacking of Sean Dyche, marking the end of a tumultuous period for the struggling Premier League club. The appointment was confirmed on Saturday, with Moyes set to take over for the remainder of the season.
Moyes, who previously managed Everton from 2002 to 2013, returns to Goodison Park after more than a decade away. During his previous tenure, Moyes established himself as one of the Premier League’s most respected and experienced managers, leading the team to a fourth-place finish in 2005 and an FA Cup final in 2009.
A statement from the club praised Moyes for his wealth of experience, noting his leadership in over 500 matches during his first spell. Everton’s executive chairman, Marc Watts, expressed confidence in Moyes’ ability to guide the club through a pivotal time: “With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium.”
Moyes, who was out of work following his departure from West Ham United at the end of last season, welcomed the opportunity to return to Everton, saying, “It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.”
The decision to bring Moyes back follows the dismissal of Sean Dyche after a difficult run of results, which left the club just one point above the relegation zone. Dyche was sacked after Everton’s defeat to Bournemouth on January 4, just hours before their 2-0 win against Peterborough in the FA Cup third round.
Moyes, 61, has agreed to a two-and-a-half-year contract with the club and will take charge of the team for their Premier League fixture against Aston Villa on Wednesday.
