JUST IN: Meranda Resigns As Lagos Speaker, Re-Elected Deputy Speaker

Hon. Mojisola Meranda, has announced her resignation as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly seven weeks after holding he mantle of leadership, as lawmakers re-elected her to the position of the Deputy Speaker on Monday.

Meranda’s resignation follows a reported meeting with high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, aimed at resolving the leadership crisis that has plagued the legislative chamber.

The crisis reached a peak on January 13, 2025, when a majority of lawmakers—more than two-thirds of the 40-member House—voted to remove Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who represents Agege Constituency I, over alleged misconduct and other offenses. Meranda, who was then his deputy, was subsequently elected Speaker, making history as the first female to lead the legislative body in Lagos State.

However, Obasa refused to accept his removal, claiming the impeachment was conducted in his absence while he was out of the country. He also criticized the heavy security presence at the Assembly complex during the impeachment process, maintaining that he remained the legitimate Speaker until due process was followed.

Despite opposition from 36 lawmakers who stood by Meranda’s leadership and passed a vote of confidence in her on February 17, 2025, Obasa made a dramatic return to the Assembly Complex on February 27, accompanied by a team of armed security operatives. His reappearance sparked renewed tensions, with his loyalists insisting on his reinstatement.
