Tinubu Hails Obasanjo’s Legacy as Former President Marks 88th Birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid tribute to former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the occasion of his 88th birthday, describing him as an extraordinary leader and statesman whose interventions in national discourse have shaped public policies and provided checks on leadership.

In a personally signed congratulatory message on Wednesday, President Tinubu acknowledged Obasanjo’s enduring influence in Nigeria’s history, noting his significant contributions as both a military and civilian leader.

“Providence has constantly thrust General Obasanjo to the forefront at critical junctures in Nigeria’s story,” Tinubu stated. He highlighted Obasanjo’s role in ending the Nigerian Civil War, his leadership as Head of State following General Murtala Mohammed’s assassination in 1976, and his pivotal return as a democratically elected president in 1999.

“During the two eras, General Obasanjo implemented critical policies and reforms that profoundly impacted the lives of many Nigerians. As head of state, he consistently demonstrated a selfless commitment to national unity, peace, and progress,” the President added.

Tinubu also recognized Obasanjo’s continued influence beyond public office, citing his contributions to conflict resolution, Pan-Africanism, and global peace through institutions like the African Union and the United Nations.

“Sometimes controversial, former President Obasanjo’s regular interventions in national affairs have helped shape public policies and acted as a check on leadership,” Tinubu remarked.

The President commended Obasanjo’s dedication to Nigeria and Africa, expressing gratitude for his service and extending heartfelt wishes on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria.

“At 88, the former president is still gaining strength. I pray that God Almighty will grant him the grace and strength to live for more years so the nation and Africa can continue to benefit from his wisdom and knowledge.”
