El-Rufai Resigns from APC, Joins SDP

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His resignation, submitted to his ward in Kaduna State on Monday, cited dissatisfaction with the APC’s direction.

In his letter, El-Rufai stated, “I have diligently served the APC and contributed to its viability. However, recent developments have shown a deviation from democratic principles and progressive values.”

El-Rufai was a key figure in the formation of the APC in 2013 and played a role in the party’s electoral victories in 2015, 2019, and 2023. During his tenure as governor, he implemented policies in education, healthcare, infrastructure, and investment.

Despite his contributions, he noted concerns over governance and internal party affairs. “At this point in my political journey, I must seek another platform that aligns with my principles,” he said.

In announcing his move to the SDP, El-Rufai expressed appreciation to his mentors, colleagues, and supporters. “As a member of the SDP, I remain committed to advancing democratic principles,” he stated.

His defection has generated discussions about potential political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. The APC has yet to issue an official response.
