JUST IN: Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers, Appoints Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as Military Administrator

President Bola Tinubu, in a decisive move to address the escalating political turmoil in Rivers State, has declared a state of emergency, effective immediately. This action results in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

The political unrest stems from a protracted feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The discord has led to a factional split within the 31-member State Assembly, with one group initiating impeachment proceedings against the governor.

Compounding the political instability, recent incidents of pipeline vandalism have been reported in the state, raising concerns over public safety and economic implications. President Tinubu cited these security challenges and the paralysis of governance as compelling reasons for the emergency declaration.

In his nationwide address, President Tinubu stated, “No good and responsible President will standby and allow the grave situation to continue without taking remedial steps prescribed by the Constitution to address the situation in the state.”

To manage the state’s affairs during this period, the President has appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as the Military Administrator. The judiciary in Rivers State will continue to function as usual, ensuring that legal processes remain uninterrupted.
