Rivers State Sole Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas Releases Withheld Local Government Allocations, Ensures Prompt Salary Payments

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retired), recently appointed as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, has announced the release of previously withheld local government allocations. This move aims to ensure the prompt payment of workers’ salaries across the state’s local government areas.
During a meeting held in Port Harcourt with Heads of Local Government Administrators, Ibas emphasized the importance of this development in restoring stability and progress within the state. He acknowledged the economic hardships faced by the Niger Delta region, noting that despite its rich natural resources, the populace continues to endure significant challenges.

Addressing the issue of delayed salary payments, Ibas expressed empathy for the affected workers and assured them that measures are in place to rectify the situation promptly. He stated, “I feel the pain of the workers,” and confirmed that the released allocations would facilitate timely salary disbursements.
To promote financial accountability, Ibas directed all local government areas to submit their wage bills, accompanied by relevant documentation, through the office of the Head of Service. He underscored his administration’s zero-tolerance policy towards financial mismanagement and pledged to scrutinize the handling of public funds diligently.
Highlighting the administration’s commitment to good governance, Ibas remarked that it is “not just a slogan, but a commitment to changing the negative narrative within the next six months.” He also stressed the necessity of collaboration with traditional rulers and security agencies to enhance grassroots security, urging local government administrators to lead these efforts within their respective domains.
In response, Clifford Paul, President of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Administrator of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, acknowledged the developmental strides made in the state despite recent political conflicts. He commended the Federal Government for appointing Ibas, attributing the decision to his competence and leadership abilities. Paul pledged support for peace and stability initiatives and urged the administrator to prioritize workers’ welfare, noting that local government workers are currently owed two months’ salaries but remain hopeful following the release of the withheld allocations.
