Olubadan Declares ‘Sarkin Sasa’ Title Illegal, Affirms Baale as Sole Traditional Authority

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has declared the title of “Sarkin Sasa” as illegal and unknown to the Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy System, reaffirming the authority of Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa as the only recognised traditional head of the Sasa community in Akinyele Local Government Area.

The monarch made the pronouncement during the Olubadan-in-Council meeting held on Monday, at his palace in Oke Aremo, Ibadan. The resolution was made public via an official statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary and made available to journalists on Tuesday.

Oba Olakulehin’s clarification follows a controversial event that occurred during the 8th-day Fidau prayer for the late Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Kastina on March 8, 2025, in Sasa, where some individuals reportedly used the occasion to turban his son as the new “Sarkin Sasa” without the consent or knowledge of the Olubadan or his Council.

In strong terms, the monarch denounced the action and reiterated that all administrative and traditional authority in Sasa lies solely with the Baale, who is the accredited representative of the Olubadan in the area.

“Let it be clearly stated that all residents and stakeholders in Sasa are subject to the authority of Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa, the Baale of Sasa. He is to be accorded the full respect and obedience due to his office.”

He added, “Any act of defiance or insubordination towards his directives will be treated as a direct affront to the stool of the Olubadan and will attract strict sanctions.”
