Shooting Stars Fined N5 Million, Fans Banned Indefinitely Over Attack on Ikorodu City Team

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed a N5 million fine on Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan over a security breach that led to an attack on the Ikorodu City FC contingent at the end of their Matchday 32 fixture, held at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

The league body, in a statement released by its disciplinary panel on Wednesday, found the Ibadan-based club guilty on three counts: failure to provide adequate security, failure to control the conduct of their supporters, and allowing the throwing of objects onto the field — including at match officials.

As part of the sanction, 3SC is to pay N3 million for the breach of security protocols and N2 million in compensation to Ikorodu City FC for the damage inflicted on their team bus during the post-match fracas.

The disciplinary panel stated, “The actions of Shooting Stars fans created a dangerous environment and disrupted the integrity of the match.” It described the situation as a gross violation of safety standards and a threat to the spirit of fair play.

The incident occurred shortly after the final whistle, as supporters of the home team reportedly turned unruly, leading to chaos in and around the stadium premises.

Reacting to the ruling, the management of 3SC expressed remorse and pledged to enforce stricter internal measures. A club spokesperson said, “We deeply apologize to Ikorodu City, the match officials, and our fans. We take full responsibility for this unfortunate incident and are committed to preventing a recurrence.”

In addition to the financial penalties, the NPFL has also slammed an indefinite ban on 3SC supporters from attending the club’s home games. The ban, effective immediately, aims to restore order and ensure the safety of players, officials, and spectators at future fixtures.
