Unethical Conduct: Nigeria Police to Sanction Officers in Viral Video Receiving Cash from Chinese Nationals

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the conduct of its officers caught in a viral video receiving cash from Chinese nationals, describing the action as unethical and unprofessional. The video, which surfaced on social media earlier this week, shows a group of armed police officers in uniform lining up as Chinese individuals hand them naira notes.
The footage has sparked public outrage, with many Nigerians questioning the integrity of law enforcement personnel and calling for urgent reforms within the Force.

Reacting to the incident, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, released a statement on Thursday confirming that the officers involved had been identified and are currently facing disciplinary action.
“The Nigeria Police Force has taken cognisance of a disturbing video making rounds in the media space, showing police officers receiving money from a Chinese national,” Adejobi said.
“The Force has strongly condemned the conduct exhibited by the police officers in the video, describing it as unprofessional and unethical.”
He further emphasized that the behavior displayed by the officers does not reflect the core values, code of conduct, or service ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.
The incident, believed to have taken place at a construction site or company premises, has fueled further concerns about systemic corruption and the lack of accountability within the security agencies.
Adejobi reaffirmed the commitment of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to restoring professionalism and discipline among police personnel and pledged that appropriate disciplinary measures would be taken to address the matter.
“We assure the public that the Force remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, and this act of misconduct will not go unpunished,” the statement added.
Nigerians on social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), have called for the immediate dismissal of the implicated officers and for improved internal mechanisms to prevent abuse of office and bribery.
The Force has urged the public to continue reporting unprofessional conduct by officers through the Police Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and promised transparency in the outcome of the ongoing disciplinary proceedings.
