Oyo Government Inaugurates Joint Task Force to Enforce Crackdown on Illegal Mining

The Oyo State Government has inaugurated a Joint Task Force to combat illegal mining activities across the state in line with Executive Order 001/2023.

The move, aimed at enforcing regulatory compliance and protecting the state’s mineral resources, was announced on Monday in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Iseyin City Hall, Iseyin, was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives of security agencies.

Speaking at the event, the Director-General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), Mr. Abiodun Oni, issued a stern warning to those involved in illegal mining, saying the state will no longer condone such activities.

“Anyone found engaging in illegal mining will be held accountable and prosecuted. The law will take its full course,” Oni stated, adding that the task force’s inauguration marks the beginning of a decisive crackdown on unauthorised mining operations.

He urged residents to be vigilant and report suspicious mining activities to the authorities, encouraging public involvement with the phrase, “If you see something, say something.”

Oni praised Governor Seyi Makinde for his “visionary leadership and unwavering support in safeguarding the lives of residents and preserving Oyo State’s natural resources.”

Also speaking at the event, the General Manager of OYSMIDA, Mrs. Olufunke Omidiran, described the initiative as a proactive and strategic response to the growing threat of illegal mining.

She noted that the task force is well-equipped to enforce the state’s mining regulations while promoting sustainable mining practices and environmental responsibility.
