Democracy Day: Prof Gbolagade Celebrates June 12, Urges Unity and Commitment to Democratic Values

Prof Abiodun Gbolagade, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Oluyole Federal Constituency Hopeful, has joined millions of Nigerians in commemorating the 26th anniversary of Democracy Day, describing it as a moment of reflection, gratitude, and renewed commitment to nation-building.

In a statement released to mark the historic occasion, Prof Gbolagade paid tribute to the men and women who made enormous sacrifices in the struggle for the entrenchment of democracy in Nigeria, particularly those who stood firm during the June 12, 1993 presidential election widely regarded as a landmark in Nigeria’s democratic journey.

“This day calls us to remember the price paid by many who stood for justice, fairness, and the right of the people to choose their leaders,” Prof Gbolagade said. “We must continue to honour that legacy by deepening democratic values, encouraging civic participation, and promoting unity and peace across all levels of society.”

Prof Gbolagade emphasized the need to strengthen participatory democracy through responsive legislation and inclusive policies. He noted that elected representatives must remain committed to enacting and supporting laws that ensure the dividends of democracy are not only preserved but made accessible to all Nigerians.

“We must encourage national policies and legislative efforts that reflect the will and welfare of the people. As a nation, our commitment to democratic governance must be seen in how we provide for the masses and promote equitable development.”

He further urged citizens of Oluyole and Nigerians at large to remain hopeful and actively engaged in the democratic process, stressing that the success of democracy depends on the collective responsibility of both leaders and followers.

“Let us embrace our shared identity as Nigerians and work together to build a country where democracy thrives and every citizen has a voice.”
