JUST IN: Portuguese Football Star Diogo Jota Dies in Tragic Car Accident in Spain

Portuguese international and Liverpool FC forward, Diogo Jota, has died in a fatal car accident in Zamora, Spain. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, claiming the lives of both Jota, aged 28, and his younger brother, André Jota, aged 26.
According to initial reports, Jota’s vehicle veered off the road under unclear circumstances before catching fire. The blaze quickly spread to nearby vegetation, complicating rescue efforts. Both brothers, who were trapped in the wreckage, died at the scene.



Diogo Jota, born Diogo José Teixeira da Silva, was a key figure in European football. He joined Liverpool FC in 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers, amassing over 180 appearances and netting 44 goals for the club. During his time at Anfield, he helped the Reds secure multiple trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup, and Carabao Cup.
Jota also had an illustrious international career with the Portuguese national team, earning dozens of caps and contributing significantly to Portugal’s triumphs in the UEFA Nations League, most recently in 2025 and previously in 2019.

Tributes have poured in from across the footballing world. Liverpool FC released a short statement expressing “deep sorrow” over the loss of a “beloved player and teammate.” Teammates, rival clubs, and fans around the globe have also taken to social media to share their grief and honor his memory.
Jota is survived by his wife, Rute Cardoso, and their three young children.
