JUST IN: FG Declares Tuesday Public Holiday to Honour Former President Buhari

The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as a public holiday in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.

This announcement comes as part of the seven-day national mourning period earlier declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the passing of the former Head of State. The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on Monday in a statement issued on behalf of the government.


According to the Minister, the holiday is a mark of respect for President Buhari’s years of dedicated service, steadfast commitment to national unity, and his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic and governance trajectory.

“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with dedication, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to the unity and progress of our great nation. This public holiday provides an opportunity for all Nigerians to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he upheld,” the statement read.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to use the holiday as a time to promote peace, patriotism, and national unity in line with the values and vision of the late president.

As previously directed, the national flag will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the period of mourning, which spans from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The Federal Government extended its condolences to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and the entire nation, praying for the peaceful repose of the late president’s soul.

The statement was signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr.Magdalene Ajani.
