We Are Not Here to Participate, We Are Here to Win — SDP Candidate, Dr Islamiyat Abdulkadir Speaks Boldly Ahead of Bye-Election

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for the Ibadan North Federal Constituency bye-election, Dr. Islamiyat Oluwatoyin Abdulkadir, has declared her confidence in winning the forthcoming poll, citing deep grassroots support and a commitment to transformative representation.
Dr. Abdulkadir, a medical doctor and cancer researcher with an international postgraduate qualification in precision oncology, said her campaign is anchored on intellect, compassion, and a clear agenda to deliver on the needs of the people. She stated this while addressing journalists in Ibadan on Thursday.

“We are not contesting to participate; we are here to win and serve,” she said firmly, noting that the constituency deserves a voice in the National Assembly that reflects competence and community commitment.
At 32, Dr. Abdulkadir has built a reputation as a youth advocate and public health campaigner, having led several medical outreaches in underserved communities across Oyo State. Her professional background, marked by a first-class medical degree and work in cancer prevention, sets her apart as a candidate bringing both knowledge and empathy into politics.

She unveiled a five-point legislative agenda focused on:
Expanding access to quality healthcare;
Empowering women and young people through targeted interventions;
Promoting education and digital literacy;
Enhancing local security and public infrastructure;
Ensuring inclusive, accountable representation through open constituent engagement.
According to her, Ibadan North stands at a crossroads and deserves a representative who is not tied to the politics of self-interest or recycled promises. “A new era has come,” she declared. “This is the time to put service above ambition, and people above politics.”
The August 16 bye-election was necessitated by the death of Hon. Musiliu Olaide Akinremi, the immediate past representative of the constituency.
Dr. Abdulkadir, who also initiated Nigeria’s first Medico-Political Symposium, says her campaign is not about rhetoric but about action and delivery. “My candidacy is an embodiment of the future our people deserve, one rooted in innovation, equity, and dignity.”
Her campaign continues to gain momentum, particularly among young professionals, women’s groups, and residents in urban and peri-urban wards of Ibadan North.
Dr. Abdulkadir appealed to the electorate to seize the moment to usher in a new leadership model: “It’s time to put Ibadan North on a progressive path that reflects our hopes, not just our history.”
