TEACHERS AS NATION BUILDERS: Rediscovering the Pride of the Profession

There are so many profession in the world as of today, but teaching profession is the bedrock of them all.

There is no profession without its own challenges, but the challenges in teaching profession is multifaceted and as a matter of fact the teaching profession is very tasking, stressful and can be very emotionally and mentally draining.

Unlike other professions, teachers are faced with different challenges like teaching children with different learning abilities, they are being underpaid in most cases, they are often molested and abused by students, parents and the entire society looks down on them and even treat them like beggars forgetting that qualified competent and dedicated teachers are the major instrument for achieving educational goals and National Development.

Right now, we are facing a major problem in the teaching profession and the major problem is that people no longer want to be a teacher and the ones who are going into teaching profession are the long term unemployed graduates who are tired of staying at home, they just want to get a job and earn a living. Another challenge is that as important as teaching is, a teacher cannot wake up one morning and decide to go into other professions like medicine, law, engineering etc.

Nevertheless, through teacher education, teachers have contributed to national developments like election, census. They also participate in creating awareness among the citizens. Teachers are the real agents that help in the development of various skills and competencies. It should be noted that the more good teachers the nation has, the more the solid citizens and hence more development of the country.

Regardless of these challenges, the way a teacher sees him/herself matter a lot and the realization of the fact that a teacher is a nation builder can help him/her navigate through by being intentional about building and brushing up of his/her skills as often as possible so as to get a better chance at being employed by a highly paid employer which will lead to higher standard of living.

Finally in Nigeria of today, as the security of life, property and the future of our children lies in the hands of individuals, so is the future of every teacher and regardless of how parents, educational institutes, community and the nation at large undermines the teaching profession, rediscovering the pride of the profession lies solely in the hands of every individual who finds him/herself in the teaching profession.
