Enugu Traders Protest: One Feared Killed as Banks and Shops Sealed Over Sit-At-Home Order
Tension erupted in Enugu State as traders from Ogbete Main Market took to the streets to protest the sealing of their shops by the government.
The move came as a response to the traders’ alleged compliance with an illegal Monday sit-at-home order enforced by a faction of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Enugu and other South-East states.
Governor Peter Mbah had previously issued warnings that shops and offices would be sealed if they remained closed on Mondays due to the sit-at-home directive.
During the protest, an unidentified individual was feared to have lost his life, though details surrounding the incident are yet to be fully confirmed. The situation escalated when the Enugu State Police Command intervened, dispersing the protesting traders and urging them to return to their businesses and clear the streets.
